Due
diligence. This investigation of a company's
strategy, characteristics, competition, products,
and services prior to committing capital is critical
to the successful financing of a business venture.
ASA provides experts in support of venture capital
firms, angel investors, merger and acquisition
professionals, venture capital brokers and
broker-dealers, incubators, private equity
investors, and other investors in pursuit of due diligence
projects.
An example: A venture capital firm considering a
large placement in a startup with a promising
medical implant device may want to consult with an
unbiased medical or
biomedical
engineering expert for input on the utility
or technical feasibility of the device.
This type of specialized feedback can be useful in
the early-, first-, second-, or mezzanine stage of
financing, or whenever an investor is pondering a
capital commitment.
At a minimum, expert advice can make ill-defined
technical concerns concrete, nebulous fears about
product or service viability tangible, and thereby
minimize risk. Ideally, such advice can reveal
whether a company's products, services, technology,
and patents are unique,
innovative, proprietary, marketable, and thus worthy of being funded.
The more thoughtful, sober, and independent-minded
the expert's analysis of the technology involved,
the better off the investor will be in the long run.
