AREAS OF EXPERTISE    SOCIAL SCIENCES AND LAW ENFORCEMENT

We have experts in the social sciences and law enforcement in the following areas:

Criminology
Literally, the scientific study of crime.  These experts use the tool of criminalistics, encompassing crime lab skills from serology to fingerprint analysis to forensic pathology, in examining evidence (large and trace) to reveal the who, what, when, where, why, and how of a crime.

Driver Behavior
Driver behavior is frequently at issue in accident litigation.  Experts in accident reconstruction comment on the mechanics of accidents; alcohol and drug experts comment on driver impairment; and human factors experts (see below) comment on reaction time and perceptual issues.

Human Factors
A cross-disciplinary field, human factors helps optimize the relationship between technology and people, especially in industrial engineering and ergonomics.

As utilized in forensic consulting, human factors is often applied in the study of accidents.  It can include modeling of how people interact with their environment in a given setting and can study, for example, adequacy of warnings, safety design, perspicuity, and human perception.

Law Enforcement
Plaintiff and defense experts who consult on a range of topics: police procedures (see below); search and seizure, probable cause, and warrantless entry issues; jail and lock-up standards and procedures; domestic violence; handling of civil disorders and riots; and firearms use and training.

Linguistics / Languages

Police Procedures
These law enforcement experts are specifically concerned with standards and duties of police officers.  Often they consult on cases involving alleged police misconduct.

Areas of knowledge include: police procedures, policies, supervision, and training;
raid tactics; vehicle pursuits, roadblocks, and stops; and "use of force" issues.

Psychology
This broad category of experts includes licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), marriage, family and child counselors (MFCCs), and clinical psychologists.

Unlike psychiatrists, none of these specialists dispenses drugs; all consult on disorders of mental and emotional health.

Questioned Documents / Forgery
Forensic document examiners have been aided in recent years by advances in technology.  Most broadly, this discipline focuses on analysis of handwriting and signature authenticity.

These experts also identify alterations, substitutions, and erasures in typewriting and study writing instruments, inks, paper, electronic printing, and photocopying.

Religion
Sociologists who specialize in the study of religion can comment on that topic as experts to attorneys and others.

Sociology
Most of these experts are professors who study the racial, cultural, and political questions that sometimes arise in legal and business disputes.
