In 1971,
Sanford B. Roberts -- an engineering professor at
the University of California, Los Angeles --
established the Association of Scientific
Advisers.
ASA was California's first expert referral
service and one of the first in the United States.
Dr. Roberts -- or Sandy, as he was known to friends
-- was a civil and biomechanical engineer with an interest in the legal process and an
understanding of the need for technical assistance
in litigation.
ASA's original group of experts included colleagues of Dr.
Roberts who were professors at UCLA and
leaders in
the scientific and academic community and in
government work (including, for example, the Apollo
program).
In the late 1970s, ASA expanded its engineering
focus to include experts in the biological, life,
and social sciences. Many of these experts
hailed from major universities such as UC
Berkeley, USC,
and UC
San Diego.
By the early 1980s, Dr. Roberts saw the need for a
full roster of experts and consultants in all areas
of expertise, especially in medicine and the health
sciences, but also in business and
the arts.
In 1996, ASA moved its office from Westwood near
UCLA a few miles north to Encino. ASA has
continued to expand its directory of consultants --
for example, adding contractors helpful in construction
litigation and enlisting highly skilled electrical
engineering experts useful in intellectual
property disputes.
Over time, the late Dr. Roberts' method of
articulating technical concepts in
easy-to-understand terms has become the hallmark of
ASA's consultants, who apply themselves to technical
and scientific issues and provide independent
findings based upon their analysis.
